What is the best remedy for sore throat?

I'm allergic to pollen and I'm taking something that helps that. However, I still have a terrible sore throat! I am on a small island where the only shop is the expensive way to cough drops, etc ... and all good! .. Is gargling with salt water useful? Any suggestions on home remedies would be greatly appreciated!

Gargling salt water works pretty damn good in my opinion! I it works better than drops or sprays, because the salt water reduces inflammation in the throat rather than hide them.
