Food Supplements Directives

The European Union is undoubtedly the most powerful influence in international Codex conferences and debates. Council documents legally recognize the growing importance that the various Codex Alimentarius guidelines and standards are acquired:

"... under the reference to Codex Alimentarius in the WTO Agreements and the presumption afforded under the relevant national measures based on such standards, guidelines or recommendations adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Similarly, also recognize that one of the objects of the Codex Alimentarius Commission is the harmonization of health standards worldwide. "

Now it seems very likely that European health and nutrition policy gradually becomes the project of a new global nutrition and health. The growing similarity between the text EU Directive on food supplements and that of the Draft Codex Guidelines for Vitamin and mineral supplements are no coincidence.

Who is who in the Codex?

The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by the Organization for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are 181 members of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, (180 member countries plus one member organization), however, Mr. Basil Mathioudakis, who was responsible for drafting the current EU Directive on food supplements, is the head of the delegation European Commission in Codex, and represents many European countries in Codex meetings.

Furthermore, the European Union has a membership fully in Codex. Mr. Mathioudakis, on behalf of the EU Commission, will certainly have a right to a significant number of votes equal to the number of its Member voting members present at the time taken.

Moreover, when Mr. Mathioudakis exercises its right to vote, no Member State shall be entitled to exercise individually their own votes. As such, Member States of the European Union are in a weak position to oppose the EU Commission in Codex, especially given the fact that most guidelines are already making the law, or in various stages of clarification and implementation in their own countries.

So what is Codex, exactly?
