what are some home remedies to treat a child that has asthma and a cold.?

My daughter has been asthmatic since the day she was born. We live on albuterol, pulmicourt, and now flovent to replace the pulmicourt. She sleeps with a humidifier and the head of the bed propped up. But there are time like right now, when she has a cold to top it off. It went straight to her chest. She sounds horrible. we seen ped' yesterday he said to do treatments every 4 hours. we are no problem.

What i am looking for are home remedies to help with the cough, She is miserable. She cant sleep or talk or go to school because she is interrupting class by coughing. She is only 6. The hot coffee works when she is having an attack, and the warm shower. My mom in law said to put Vick's rub on her feet with socks. honestly i live by that, because it does help. I just wanted to help her little more. Please send me some ideas! Thanks

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 6. I'm 49 now. My Pulmonary Specialist always recommended Robitussin DM for my cough. Don't get the PE, because it contains an antihistamine and can dry out her lung secretions and make her asthma worse. Increase her fluid intake. If the color of her sputum changes from clear to yellow, green or brown she needs to get on antibiotics so that this does not develop into a severe asthmatic problem with pneumonia, or status asthmaticus...the latter of which is an asthma attack that is extremely difficult to break, even with treatment.
Sometimes the doctor may use prednisone therapy. It works really well, should only be taken for the duration of the exacerbation (worsening), and then slowly tapered off. Prednisone and other corticosteroids, like Medrol work as an anti-inflammatory.
Make sure you keep that humidifier clean, a dirty humidifier can actually cause bacteria to thrive and make her sicker. Keep her sheet clean as well. Use those clorox wipes on surfaces to keep others from getting sick and her from being re-exposed. Germs and Bacteria can live on hard surfaces for up to 4 days.
I'm sorry you have to go thru this. I know it is hard on you and her too. The best thing you can do is prevent her from being in contact with anyone who might be sick, and teach her about not touching her nose or eyes, and wash her hands frequently.
Sorry for such a long answer, but I do hope this helps.
